The date is significant here: the decorated stands are on the route of the royal procession to St Paul's, for a service of thanksgiving for the Prince of Wales's recovery from typhoid. The most prominent flag waving outside the station is the Royal Standard. In the middle of the row is the Charing Cross itself, that is, the Eleanor Cross, though the station hotel itself is not visible. (The upper parts were twentieth-century additions.)

The Royal Collections site explains that this shows "'the old Lamberhurst railing since removed', which used to encircle the area in front of the Cathedral."
