Daniel’s Prayer

Daniel,vi: 10– 11. A touching representation of faith. In contrast to the grand gestures of most of the other scenes, this episode depicts Daniel praying in the quiet of the mid-day, in the privacy of his chambers. The outstretched hands are an eloquent sign of devotion and God’s grace is signalled by the ray of light. As usual, Poynter gives the scene an intense physicality which is animated by the details of the decorative walls and (most tellingly of all) the worn rug, sandals, and textured floor.
