Miriam
Edward Poynter
Wood engraving by the Dalziels.
9 x 6½ inches
Dalziels’ Bible Gallery, plate 32
Exodus,xv:20. Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, is shown dancing in celebration of the Egyptians’ defeat on the shores of the Red Sea. The image embodies Poynter’s Aesthetic credentials; fascinated with female beauty, he conveys the vivacity of the moment in the excited swirl of her costume. This device recurs elsewhere in his art and is also a feature of paintings by Frederick Leighton.
