Moses Keeping Jethro’s Sheep
Edward Poynter
Wood engraving by the Dalziels.7 x 6¼ inches
Dalziels’ Bible Gallery, plate 26
Exodus iii:1. Moses in a serene mood, caring for Jethro’s sheep during his period as a shepherd. The classical torso typifies Poynter’s style. There is a strong contrast between the violence of the previous plate and the pastoral scene shown here, with Moses stroking the muzzle of a ram. The evidence of husbandry is measured against the wild ruggedness of the landscape.
