Plate 38. Pickersgill depicts the five daughters of Zelophehad appealing to Moses for the right to inherit their deceased father’s property in the absence of a male heir(Numbers 27: 1–11). The gesture of the main figure, with her arms outstretched and her back to the audience, is especially powerful, conveying the depth of the characters’ feelings.
