THE applause which the performance of Hugh and his new friend elicited from the company at The Boot, had not yet subsided, and the two dancers were still panting from their exertions, which had been of a rather extreme and violent character, when the party was reinforced by the arrival of some more guests, who, being a detachment of United Bulldogs, were received with very flattering marks of distinction and respect. The exuberant singer who stretches his arms wide, a hat in one hand and a drinking-bowl in the other, merely suggests the environment in which Hugh and the hangman encounter Sim Tappertit. The miles gloriosus is now the swaggering, beautifully uniformed leader of the ultra-Protestant United Bulldogs, which apparently is led by several of his lieutenants from the Apprentice Knights. These three figures appear in the upper right-hand corner of the main illustration for this chapter, Mr. Tappertit Finds an Old Friend.
