The Muses

Albert Moore

1868

Wood engraving by W. J. Palmer

5¾ x 33/8 inches

Illustration for Milton’s Hymn on Christ’s Nativity, 1868, p.28.

The Muses – but not at all in celebratory mood. Recreating the imagery of his paintings, Moore presents a series of languid and fretful women, trapped, as it were, in the timeless space of classical mythology. The stacked arrangement recalls the linearity of Roman murals or carved reliefs in marble.
