Lady Mason going before the Magistrates

Lady Mason going before the Magistrates

John Everett Millais

Wood engraving by the Dalziels

6¾ x 4¼ inches

Anthony Trollope,Orley Farm, facing, II, 97.

The drama moves towards its climax as Lady Mason is summonsed to appear in court. As in earlier designs, Millais envelopes the character in a hatched darkness which suggests her state of mind. The contrast between the worried expressions of the male figures and the sorrowfulness of her expression further heightens the sense of impending doom.
