Monkton Grange

Monkton Grange

John Everett Millais

Wood engraving by the Dalziels

6¼ x 4¼ inches

Anthony Trollope, Orley Farm, Vol 1, facing p. 216.

The privileged at play, wearing the dress of the times. Another vivid representation of contemporary life which reminds us of the characters’ social milieu – and the distance Lady Mason has to fall. This sort of informal reportage reflects the illustrator’s continuing deployment of Pre-Raphaelite realism. The image also embodies the artist’s personal interest in hunting, a leisure activity he shared with the author.
