Mr Furnival’s welcome home
John Everett Millais
Wood engraving by the Dalziels
6¼ x 4¼ inches
Anthony Trollope,Orley Farm, Vol 1, facing p. 87.
A frosty image of the dynamics of upper middle-class life: Mrs Furnival’s stony face contrasts with her husband’s stance as he kisses their daughter. The image compares interestingly with the warmth of the exchange between Sir Peregrine and Lucius, who stands awkwardly to the left of the composition; Mrs Furnival is too disapproving to greet her husband, or even to stand up.
