‘Pandemonium’. Mezzotint by John Martin. Plate 5 in his illustrations for Paradise Lost. Martin’s vision of the spiritual world is, as so often, that of a place of epic architecture and tiny figures. Such plates undoubtedly influenced Cecil B. de Mille in his film of 1923, The Ten Commandants.
