Velocipedes from His horn book, for the use of greenhorns and others who would learn of the anthropophagi and divers strange things existing at the end of the XIXth century (1898), by Wallis Mackay (1852-1907). The popularity of the bicycle had led to the notoriety of a certain type of cyclist — the "Scorcher" who dashes recklessly and dangerously through the traffic and "unoffending pedestrians." Mackay also warns of "Bicycle Back," in other words, curvature of the spine induced by crouching over the handles, and the even worse possibility of shaking the spinal column so much that the brain is injured.... On the next page he features the lady cyclist, another disturbing phenomenon!
