Title page for The Fall of the Nibelungs.

This is Macdougall’s title page for his wife’s translation of the German epic. Though combining Art Nouveau motifs, the overall effect of this composition is in line with the aesthetics of Arts and Crafts and recalls the congested intricacy of Morris’s title page for ‘The Kelmscott Chaucer.’
