Charles Samuel Keene

Horace Harral

circa 1865

Platinum print

9½ x 7 ½ inches

A fine photograph of Keene by the engraver Horace Harral who was a close friend and correspondent. The image shows the artist as a louche bohemian, lounging, somewhat incongruously, against a brick wall which is depicted in the manner of Pre-Raphaelite verisimilitude. The image reinforces the wide-spread notion that Keene was unconventional and aloof, an urbane man in an urban setting. Reproduced with permission of The National Portrait Gallery, London.
