The king is reminded of Mordecai, who saved him from assassination and is himself about to be killed; the king commands Haman (crouching at the monarch’s feet) to reprieve Mordecai and reward him for his service. This act has wider implications for the survival of the Jews. The composition stresses the pivotal moment, with the king raising his hand in command. Once again, Houghton draws on his Oriential imagery, focusing on the costumes and the luxurious setting. The effect, typically, is dream-like, even though the scene is dramatic and weighted with huge significance.
