These small vignettes act as proleptic signs to stimulate the juvenile reader, lead into the main text, and offer visual continuities with the book as a whole. Put together in this horizontal montage, they exemplify the main tendencies of Greenaway’s art, combining formalized abstractions (the three bonnets in a row at the top) with naturalism (the detailed costumes appearing in the bottom half of the page), static frieze-like compositions (four and five) with energetic movement (the second from the top).
