Paul Gray

1866

Wood engraving by the Dalziels

6 ½ x 4¾ inches

Illustration for ‘D.L’s’ ‘The Lost Birthday Gift’,The Quiver1 (1866): p.505.

One of Gray’s finest designs in a rural idiom. He is particularly adept at conveying the atmosphere of the moment, showing his characters in surroundings which though familiar are far from tame and are sometimes mildly threatening. The close working of the detail, especially in the scratchy lines to represent the textures of the bark and twigs, is typical of his work; the Dalziels’ expert engraving adds to the effect.
