Florence Burton makes up a packet

Mary Ellen Edwards

1867

Wood engraving by Horace Harral

6 x 4 inches

Illustration for Anthony Trollope’sThe Claverings. The Cornhill Magazine, December 1867, facing p.702.

Florence’s response to Harry’ confession. Typically, Edwards depicts her suffering in the form of a self-contained figure in which the emotion is deeply buried, and all the more resonant for its under-statement. In this respect her art is closely linked to the Pre-Raphaelites, notably Millais.
