Here the late nineteenth- or early twentieth-century illustrator depicts the adolescent Barnaby Rudge, the titular character of the historical novel that Charles Dickens situated in the time of the Gordon Riots, in eighteenth-century, adult costume, dancing with his shadow, as Mary Angela Dickens describes him doing early in the third chapter: "he's a merry fellow that shadow, and keeps close to me, though I am silly" (72). Effective as the pose and the wild hair may be in communicating Barnaby's personality may be, the boy is far too well-dressed for a poor widow's son from Southwar, near London Bridge.
