This anodyne image exemplifies Crowquill’s deployment of the phsyiognomical code, representing the maidenly virtues in the form of a Keepsake beauty, ‘young and fair’ (204). Though produced in 1854, the image bespeaks the old-fashioned style of the 1820s and ’30s, which is far from the bold visual types presented by Pre-Raphaelite illustrators.
