This may well be a picture that Collier worked up earlier: "I haven't heard anything from Isbister about making a sketch of the Trumpet Major to serve as an advertisement but I will make one anyway as it will always serve to introduce into the text" (Collier to Hardy, 20 November 1879, Dorset County Museum).
