‘And the Dish ran away with the Spoon,’ 1882. Wood engraving by Edmund Evans of a watercolour. 6 ¼ x 7 ¼ inches. An illustration in Hey Diddle Diddle and Baby Bunting, 7. A spirited, slight weird, picturing of the old nursery rhyme. Caldecott personifies the Dish and the Spoon as servants running away together, dressing them in the livery of a great house. His representation of the action has his usual dramatic directness, humour and vigorous representation of movement.
