‘Bumpety, bumpety, bump!’, 1884. Wood engraving of a pen and ink drawing. 3½ x 7 inches. An illustration in Ride a-Cock Horse to Banbury Cross, 13. This is the first in a sequence of 10 scenes in a montage telling the story of the Farmer, his Daughter, and their unfortunate fall. The illustration is in accordance with the words, but Caldecott adds more in terms of the setting and action as one character opens the gate and a yokel looks on. As usual, a droll humour is at work.
