The final image of the tale shows a now reformed Cuckoo who regrets his tricks that led to the death of the Pipit chicks. Some of the mice look more interested in the cheese in the pantry than in the Cuckoo’s sermon. Young Beatrix Potter made a copy of this illustration in one of her sketchbooks, suggesting the influence of Blackburn on the younger naturalist artist.
