The Deliverer

The Deliverer

Edward Burne-Jones

Wood-engraving, engraved by Horace Harral

5½ x 3 inches

Mrs Alfred Gatty, Parables from Nature, facing 205.

Burne-Jones’s take on the Nativity, with the Holy Family being celebrated by divine campanologists. The artist once again deploys a Pre-Raphaelite style, though the wider allusion is to Quattrocento painting – the ‘original pre-Raphaelitism’, we might say, of Botticelli, Perugino, Piero, and Mantegna.
