King Sigurd, the Crusader

King Sigured, the Crusader

Edward Burne-Jones

Wood-engraving, engraved by the Dalziels

6 x 4½ inches

Good Words (1862): 248.

A complex Pre-Raphaelite image, combining dislocations of scale, intricate patterns, introspective, brooding characters and neo-medieval paraphernalia in the manner of Rossetti. It also recalls the effects of illustrations in early printed books, and anticipates the artist’s work for the Kelmscott Press in the 90s.
