Commentary

Pictures of English Life contains nine large (26.8 by 22.1 cm) scenes of country life by Barnes, engraved by Cooper on wood, along with two maritime scenes by E. M. Wimperis and poems by J. G. Watts. There are many such genre illustrations of his in sixties periodicals, but his range is fairly limited (sentimental rural life, working people, children, etc).

The book contains ten full-page images, eight by Barnes. The two by Wimperis are maritime scenes, and one by Barnes is The Fisherman's Return. The remaining seven are all country scenes, so the inclusion of one to link with the Wimperis is probably an attempt to link country and fishing life. The same family are likely depicted throughout the four "family" scenes as the portraits the husband, wide, and two young children are consistent.
