Commentary

With a satirical eye on the upper-middle-class denizens of the seaside resort of Brighton ("London-by-the-Sea") Barnes derisively terms the post-church service perambulation on the Marine Parade a "Church Parade." He satirizes the well-dressed bourgeoisie as they attempt to appear calm and in control (foreground) as those in the background are about to be engulfed by a gigantic wave.
