St Christopher with the Christ Child

Henry Wilson, 1864-1934

Gesso relief with marble surround

St Christopher Chapel

St Martin's Church, Low Marple, nr. Stockport

This part of the church was added in 1909, and the relief is its main feature. It harks back to the old tradition of having a representation of St Christopher opposite the entrance to the church: "Wilson, who was increasingly turning to sculpture in his later career, gave the tradition an intriguing twist by taking as his model for St Christopher a well-known Renaissance sculpture, Michelangelo’s David" ("History and Heritage").
