Some Small Tables

The 1901 Book

W.J. Neatby (1860-1910)

1901

Booklet (of designs for prospective clients): 4 1/2" x 6"

Examples on p. 12 of the booklet of the small pieces of furniture which Neatby could produce in his new partnership with Ernest Hollyer Evans. In fact, an advert on the back of Charles Holme’s Modern British Domestic Architecture and Decoration of this year (1901) states "Decorations: Furniture. Neatby Evans & Co. Designers and Workers. Wood. Metal. Enamels. Mosaics. Stained Glass. Modelled Plaster..." (see "Neatby, William James; Neatby Evans & Co. (1901-1908)." Furniture was, then, an important part of their output. Unlike earlier, highly elaborated High Victorian items, the firm's were simple, depending for effect on structural propriety and pleasing, often stencilled, motifs. — Jacqueline Banerjee
