The engraved inscription round the rim of the bowl reads "WILLIELMUS BURGES ME FIERI FECIT ANNO D-M MDCCCLXXVIII." That the piece was intended for his own use is confirmed by his stock-book entry for March 7th 1878. A detailed drawing for the cup and its decoration is preserved in Burges' Day Book now in the RIBA Library.
