Issued by George Watson’s College for Young Ladies, Edinburgh, this certificate was awarded to a Miss (name erased). The prize is for excellence in Latin and the label proudly bears its classical credentials in the form of heraldic devices framing an impressive shield. The corporate motto ‘Terraque Marique’ (‘By land and sea’) is not the institution’s but the moniker of Merchant Company Schools, of which Watson’s was a member. The college continued until 1974 when it merged with its other branch (for boys) to form a single independent day school.
