Cloth binding for ‘The Yellow Book,’ 7

1895

Yellow cloth with heavy blocking

8¼ x 6½ inches

This edition showcases paintings from the Newlyn School, including photogravures of work by Frank Bramley, Stanhope Forbes, Norman Garstin and Walter Langley. It is appropriate, therefore, that the cover design is also by a Newlyn practitioner, the metal worker, John Drew Mackenzie. The image represents a nautical scene to invoke the atmosphere of the Cornish town, but the bouquet in the extreme foreground alludes to the decorativeness of Art Nouveau.
