Cloth binding for Hibberd’s ‘Clever Dogs, Horses, etc.’

1868

Cloth binding gilt, with chromolithographic inserts

8½ x 6½ inches

Though illustrated by Harrison Weir, the cloth binding is by an anonymous hand, with one of the Weir’s designs re-drawn and rendered chromolithographically. The appeal of seeing a horse operating a pump for itself is amplified by other devices – the floral bouquet framing the central panel and the shaped embossing at the four corners. Each of these is the brainchild of an unknown designer – or the product of several.
