Cloth binding for The Story of the Norman Conquest, by Daniel Maclise, 1866. 8½ x 19¼ inches. Maclise’s gilt design of a Norman portal is an appropriate gateway to the artist’s imposing, linear designs of the events before and after the Conquest. Issued to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the invasion, the book is a monumental album and is one of best of the Art Union’s publications. Few copies survive with Maclise’s original motif.
