Paper design for ‘Amygydala’

Joseph William Gleeson White

1894

Pen and black ink with pencil under-drawing, on paper

This impressive design is an abstraction of organic forms, suggestive of leaves and stems without resembling any particular type, although they may recall sycamore seeds. In this composition, as in many others, Gleeson White moves from the realism of Arts and Crafts to the pure line and form of Art Nouveau.
