Binding for Pictures of English Landscape

Owen Jones, designer

1863

Elaborate gilt blocking on blue cloth.

10¼ x 8 inches

This is one of the most important gift books of the period, uniting Tom Taylor’s poems with Birket Foster’s idyllic engravings and Jones’s elaborate cover design. Most of Jones’s bindings are in the form of embossed covers in deep relief; however, he also understood the conventions of cloth and gilt and in this binding combines rustic motifs with bold lettering.
