St. Mary's Church, Harrow (restoration)
Sir George Gilbert Scott
Originally consecrated 1094; thoroughly restored and refaced by Scott, who also added a vestry, 1846-49
Harrow on the Hill, Middlesex (now part of London)
This Grade I listed parish church, with its close connections to Harrow School, is a well-known and widely visible historic landmark: "St Mary is a concentrate of Harrow, and of English history. [Archbishop] Lanfranc began the building, St. Anselm consecrated it: work was carried on in the thirteenth century by the rector Elias de Dereham, who was responsible for the building of Salisbury Cathedral. Becket was here in 1170, only 12 days before his martyrdom. Cranmer was here and surrendered the manor of Harrow to Henry VIII in 1544. The sense of continuity is almost overwhelming" (Stevenson 72-73).
