Main Hall of the Royal Scottish Museum, Chambers Street, Edinburgh, by Captain Francis Fowke

Main Hall of the Royal Scottish Museum. Captain Francis Fowke (1823-1865). 1861-1866. Photograph by kind permission of Dave Henniker of Edinburgh Photography; commentary by Jacqueline Banerjee, 2010.

This professional photograph makes it easier to see that the Royal Museum was inspired by the Crystal Palace (see "Inspiring Past"). Part of the museum's architectural interest derives from its exploitation of "the possibilities of iron construction" (Glendinning and MacKechnie 163).
