This medal was exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1882, part of no. 373. John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) was an influential English philosopher and political economist. For many years he served as a colonial administrator with the East India Company. He served as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Westminster from 1865-68. He was an early advocate for Women’s rights, including the right to vote, and also was a powerful advocate for such social reforms as labour unions and farm cooperatives.
