Winchester Cathedral

This unusual and striking memorial to Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Berkeley Pigott , CB, DSO, late of 60th Rifles and 21st Lancers, is part of an assemblage of other memorials in the North Aisle of the Cathedral. [Memorial in its setting] With the inscription, "Lang's Neck 1881," it shows an officer supporting a drooping soldier on a equally battle-weary horse. It seems likely that Pigott earned his DSO by bravely helping the wounded after the Boers had repulsed the English at Lang's Neck (also spelt Laing's Nek) in the Transvaal, during the first Boer War. The memorials flanking it are to an unrelated General and Field Marshal, both from the Rifle Brigade.
