This is one of the hummingbird family to which Gould was particularly devoted. Many shared his obsession: "from Sta. Fe de Bogota alone many thousands of skins are sent to London and Paris," he wrote. "and sold as ornaments for the drawing room and scientific purposes" (qtd. in Tree 159).
