Wildes Farm, which began as a fifteenth-century cottage around which other buildings or wings accumulated, was deeded to Eton College by Henry VIII. In later years it became the home of Sir Raymond Unwin, the pioneering architect-town planner who designed with Lutyens Hampstead Garden City. Wildes, obviously no longer a farm, saw London grow up around it: Continuing in the direction of this picture, the house looks out on Hampstead Garden City. To the left was the home of Sir Nicolas Pevsner, the great architectural historian, and past that the famous pub, The Bull and Bush.
