This pleasant pastoral scene is one of the few works from Dadd's years at Broadmoor, though there were others which must have been destroyed, such as his scenery and murals for drama productions in the men's recreation hall there (see Allderidge 33). But as far as we know, Dadd had hardly painted in oils since 1862 (see Smith), and Wandering Musicians is the very last of his works in this medium to have survived. [Commentary continues below.]
