Commentary by Paul Crowther
Boyce was originally inspired to become a painter by the work of David Cox. However, after his contact with Ruskin in 1854, his work eventually became highly detailed in the manner of the Pre-Raphaelites. The present picture is an interesting work, transitional between the influence of Cox and Ruskin.
