A path through trees

William Hyde (1859-1925)

First published 1898

Photogravure

This is one of Hyde's illustrations for The Nature Poems of George Meredith, praised by A. J. Hammerton for their "rare quality in nature-feeling and repose, with just that touch of indefiniteness that leaves us still with a little of the mystery to colour our vision of the scene, so that no better illustrator of Meredith's poems could be imagined" (379-80).
