Although most commonly associated today with his futuristic metalwork designs, Dresser was a prolific designer of wallpaper and textiles, and was probably best known for these during his lifetime. However, the utilitarian and ephemeral nature of such pieces makes them extremely rare. Dresser wrote in great detail about the treatment of designs for table linen in his Principles of Design.
