St Mary's (New) Church, Stoke Newington, London

For a particularly large and grand church like St Mary's, the architect George Gilbert Scott wanted only the best quality fittings, and the font was not carved” by even the most skilful of stone-masons, but by a "fine art sculptor" (see Benedict Read's distinction between the two, 215). So the craftsmanship here is really first class, the circular marble font "having figures of angels from the chisel of the younger Westmacott" (Bumpus 134). The list entry for the church describes it, quite fairly, as "sumptuous."
