Design for a Door

Charles Sargeant Jagger

c.1911

Source: McAllister 91

According to I. G. McAllister, Jagger "gained several prizes, and the Travelling Scholarship for a bronze door design, made for a private art collection" (91). This is the type of door made famous by Ghiberti's doors for the Florence Baptistery, and taken up more recently by (for example) Baron Henry de Triqueti for the doors of the Madeleine in Paris. Even without closer views of the details, we can see that the reliefs are deep and powerful, of a romantic caste, recalling such work as Triqueti's and revealing the aspirations of this up-and-coming young sculptor.
