A highly distinguished botanist, botanical collector and taxonomist, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker was responsible for discovering thousands of new species in far-flung regions, was the Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew for twenty years, President of the Royal Society from 1873-77, and the recipient of an array of international honours. In this way, he played "a central role in the transformation of botany's status – raising his science as he raised himself" (Endersby 34).
